It used to mean that in English too. Numerous old songs, such as Christmas songs, are still sung that have the word "gay" in them with this meaning. "Carol Of The Bells" for example has the phrase "Gaily they ring while people sing", though this adverb "gaily" is still in use to mean "happily", whereas "gay" to mean "happy" is basically archaic now and only found in old writing and songs. I've never seen "gaily" being used to mean "in a homosexual way", lol. |

Curiously one of the rare phrases where "gay" still means "merry" is in talking about France: "gay Paris" (or "Paree"). |
