More on my theory that this song is a bitter lament about the "friend zone": (i) the title; (ii) "all I ever asked was a piece of love from you" (but I didn't receive it); (iii) "When the night has come, and your baby's on the run / Realise the one and only clue" — i.e. when your boyfriend isn't treating you right, take the hint that you could be with me. |

One of my friends, who also liked the song's lyrics theorised, that it's about a child singing about abusive parents, which is also a very deep and meaningful understanding of the lyrics. I don't think the songwriter inteded for it to sound that way, but due to the fact, that a lot of lines can be taken both ways is interesting. |
