if i buy a PC game on Steam today and it's too slow, it's very unlikely i can go into a menu and reduce the graphic quality or turn off effects

clearly these people took care & time to write some clever engines that could 'downgrade'. very difficult with the sound i would think

i was (still am) impressed by the games that were designed to work across wide ranges of hardware quality. like maybe you could play it on EGA+beeper, or SVGA+SB (Commander Keen was good for this)
